Sizing up the health
and social care scene?
Abbie, Zoe and Leanne's stories
Abbie Thompson, Leanne Paterson, Zoe Beardsley and tutor Louise Booker-Parkinson, heading for a healthy career at Don Valley School, Doncaster.Abbie
I‘m Abbie and I'm doing OCR Level 1 in Health and Social Care. This year we're doing Child Development, First Aid and Mobility. When I'm older I want to work with children doing child minding.
Leanne
I'm Leanne and I'm doing OCR Level 2 in Health and Social Care. My Mum thought it would be a good idea for me to do this course because she always knew that I wanted to do something with medicine.
Tutor
I think the fact that they have chosen to take Health and Social Care for an option at Key Stage 4, which is GCSE, makes a big difference to the learning. The courses are very practical, and the students get to do a lot of different activities. They learn in a variety of ways. Guest speakers, they use ICT, go out on visits and trips and do a lot of practical-based activities.
Zoe
I'm Zoe and I'm doing OCR Level 2 in Health and Social Care. Two people came in from the training company and they showed us a presentation on how to treat burns and asthma and someone was choking, and then they let us practise doing the recovery position and CPR on dolls and bandaging.
I like working in groups because you get to help each other out and talk about what you're doing so you don't miss anything out.
Tutor
We've had a lot of positive experiences. We've got 100% pass rate on all the courses that we've run so far. A lot of positive feedback from the students and from the work placement settings.
Zoe
I think it will be good to go on the work placement because it's different to school and it's different surroundings, working with adults instead of kids.
Tutor
The number of students that are taking Health and Social Care has increased over the past two to three years. Originally there were about 50 students and now there are nearly 200. Some of the sixth formers that have taken Health and Social Care that have followed it on from taking GCSE are going into areas such as nursing. midwifery, occupational health.
Leanne
We've just got our certificate today for the First Aid course which we took in the school hall. We had to do scenarios on choking, asthma, shock, bleeding and burns.
Tutor
I enjoy teaching children that we get on these courses because they've got a caring nature and a different type of attitude to work.
