Connaire and Lindsay's stories
Connaire wants to pursue a career in catering after getting interested at school by joining the junior chef's course run by Rotherham College. Meanwhile, Lindsay can see herself running functions for a hotel. Both are doing a BTEC National Certificate in Hospitality and Supervision.
Connaire
Hi, I'm Connaire. I'm doing my first year National Qualification in BTEC Supervision and Hospitality.
I'm going on to do my NVQ Level 1 in Food Service and Food Preparation.
Whilst I was at school I did the school link programme and the junior chef's course.
I came to Rotherham College because I was interested in furthering my skills in catering and hospitality.
I like the course that I am doing because I get to do both theory and practical work in the kitchen.
I learn best when I am doing 'hands on' practical work - that's why I chose this course.
Next year I've chosen to do my BTEC Level 2 in Food Service and Food Preparation.
For my work placement I'm now working at Magna serving up to 800 people at a time, and some day I hope to own my own restaurant.
Nick
Hello, my name's Nick Crofts Smith. I'm Curriculum Manager for Hospitality and Catering here at Rotherham College of Arts and Technology.
Welcome to the College restaurant, this is a realistic working environment where our students work in both food preparation and cooking and food and beverage preparation. We work with local schools on a variety of projects to give young people choices in vocational education.
Lindsay
I'm Lindsay, I'm studying at Rotherham College doing a BTEC National Certificate in Hospitality and Supervision.
On the course I work in the restaurant, learning restaurant skills like laying the table, silver service, and dealing with customers.
As well as this I have to do course work, so I have lessons.
I could see myself working in a hotel dealing with conferences or weddings and different functions and also being a manager.
