Bioscience
Bioscience involves working with living organisms like plants, bacteria, viruses and fungi to discover how they work and how they can be used. The UK is a world leader in bioscience research, with jobs in drug discovery and development, plant biotechnology and tissue engineering.

Catering and Hospitality
The hospitality industry is one of the fastest growing sectors in the UK. Hotels, restaurants, bars, clubs, contract food service providers and hospitality services all need qualified catering and hospitality staff. It's a sociable job - and can even provide opportunities to travel the world!

Construction and the Built Environment
This is not all hard-hats and mixing cement! There are jobs available at all levels, from basic labourers to chartered surveyors. And we're not just talking about ‘jobs for the boys' - almost 200,000 women work in construction in the UK.

From advertising and fashion to web design and the performing arts, there are all sorts of exciting careers on offer in creative and digital media. There are more than 5,000 cultural enterprises in South Yorkshire, and as many as 1,000 new jobs will be created each year, between now and 2010.

Information and Communication Technology (ICT)
It's hard to find a business that doesn't rely heavily on ICT. Over the years, ICT and the internet have had a massive impact on how we work and communicate - even in lessons at school! Jobs include software developer, data processor and games programmer.

Leisure and Tourism
When you think of tourist destinations, you don't immediately think of South Yorkshire! But tourism currently contributes £193 million to South Yorkshire's economy. Between 2005 and 2010, there could be 1,500 new jobs available in leisure and tourism, including health club managers, personal trainers and event organisers.

Manufacturing
Did you know that steel production is currently at its highest level ever, thanks to improvements in technology? In total, over 79,000 people are employed in manufacturing in South Yorkshire - that's 14% of the entire workforce. As well as the steel industry, there are manufacturing jobs in aerospace, engineering, food and printing.

Retail
By 2012 one in five people in the UK workforce will be employed in the retail sector. But it isn't just about working behind a till or serving customers. Jobs include retail manager, window dresser, accountant, sales assistant, customer service manager, security guard, stock manager, buyer, personal shopper and marketing manager.
